NAFCON/BAYAN to P-NOY: “Kung hindi ka gagaya kay Gloria, magbibigay tulong ang masa”
On July 26, following the State of the Nation Address of Noynoy Aquino, about 50 members of BAYAN-USA and the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON), a coalition which includes Filipino Community Center, led a rally march to the Philippine Consulate in San Francisco. The protestors demanded that the new president take action to champion the rights of Filipinos in the Philippines, in the US, and around the world. This rally was one of many throughout the US, including simultaneous rallies in Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, and New Jersey.
Protesters around the country are giving P-NOY a chance to prove his worth as president, but are remaining vigilant. Above all, protestors are asking for action on the president’s part—not to just cry out about Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s presidency, but to take action to improve conditions for all Filipinos. Particularly pressing issues mentioned by rally speakers include human rights violations in the Philippines, the exploitation of overseas workers, immigration reform in the US, government misspending, industrial and agrarian reform, and holding Arroyo accountable for the errors of her administration.
