Future Affordable Housing at the Balboa BART parking lot

District 11 communities uniting around a vision to strengthen our neighborhood….

WHAT:

WHEN: Wednesday, October 12th, 2008, 6:00 – 8:00 pm

WHERE: Balboa High School, 1000 Cayuga Avenue, in the “Green Room”, San Francisco

WHO: Over 100 community members representing the Filipino Community Center, PODER (People Organizing to Demand Environmental & Economic Rights), and Coleman Advocates for Children & Youth.  Supervisor John Avalos will be on hand, as well as representatives from the Mayor’s Office of Housing, BART, the Municipal Transportation Agency, and the Public Health Department.

WHY: The parking lot at Balboa Park BART station at the corner of San Jose and Geneva Avenue was recently designated a transit oriented development site for affordable housing in the Balboa Park Station Area Plan that was adopted by the Board of Supervisors.  Neighborhood residents and community organizations are joining together to transform the city-owned lot into a community project where families can live, work, and play.  PODER, the Filipino Community Center, and Coleman Advocates are showing that community members are the planners in their own neighborhoods, and showing the City what they need in their own communities.  “We want to turn the upper yard into an asset for the community… It’s all about community participating and leading the way,” said PODER member Eva Chavez.

VISUALS: There will be great photo opportunities and many creative visuals at the event as well as speakers and testimonies from neighborhood residents.
